Midweek Race 07/05/15

Next is the partnership of Mackey & Lockhart of Ballylesson with two good birds 1358 & 1357.

Midweek Race Result 20/08/14

As we thought today turned out to be a good day to race pigeons. With a light W.N.W wind the birds made steady times. The loft of Morrison Bros, Killyleagh, had a good race to clock the first 2 birds and collected £80 winnings. The boys were keen to point out that the winning birds were from their good friends Geraldine and Patrick Brown, Annsborough.

Rodney McCormick, of the McCormick and Muckle partnership from Millisle, was delighted with his birds performance as they took the next 3 spots winning £20. Congratulations to all those in the result and many thanks to all those who supported us with racers and trainers.

Unfortunately, straight after liberation a peregrine struck. Viv and I watched as it pursued after the large cloud of birds across the sky. They then split into about ten smaller groups which seemed to be what the peregrine wanted as it selected its target. When one bird dove for cover the chase was on, dropping like a stone it attacked, but to our surprise the pigeon escaped with fantastic skill. It's a horrible feeling watching when you know there is nothing you can do. We hope all of you got every bird home safely.

Next Wednesday will be our final midweek race this year. We will have some special prizes and also a draw. So come along, you will be very welcome.

Midweek Race Result 13/08/14 - Navan

Our Midweek race got off to a very wet start this morning with heavy rain & poor visibility. Putting our trust in what Barra Best when predicted the day would improve around lunchtime we set off to Navan with both transporters and with a west-north-west wind it made for a very steady race.

From Newry to Navan the weather was fine, high cloud & the sun peeping through. Our planned lib time was 12.15 but on phoning our contacts en-route home we decided to hold the birds to 1.15. This proved to be the correct decision & the birds were liberated at 1.15 & cleared immediately. With the west in the wind the fast birds were next the coast.

The in form loft of Tommy Horner Crossgar had a super day taking the top 3 positions with his Harmony Lofts team of young birds. As you can see from the result many of the lofts were clocking within seconds of each other. Many thanks to the great support for our Midweek race, also to the faithful helpers who make race marking run smoothly each week.

Midweek Race Result from Navan 30/07/14

With both transporters full of racers and trainers it made for a very good race. The birds were liberated at 12:15 in very good conditions. The main bunch cleared right away to leave approximately 200 still hanging around. Much to our surprise this batch headed off for Dublin and out of sight.  5 mins later they came back over our heads at full speed straight for home. Wow, what a fantastic sight to see the birds in full flight!

With the wind from the west we felt the coastal men were favourites but those city boys are so hard to beat...

Midweek Race Result 23/07/14

Our first young bird midweek race got off today (23/07/14) to a great start.  With the weather perfect for racing and 1200 birds on board our transporter, racers and trainers, Viv and I headed off to Navan Race Course.

The convoy were liberated at 12:15 in a light north east wind, the birds were all gone in seconds.  With the east in the wind the birds made for a more central route home.

Tommy McKinstry from the Tandragee Club had a super day to take the top 3 positions and collecting the total £100 prize money.

Taking 4th position is the Shankill loft of McAuley, Kells & Bowles, closely followed by Fairley Bros.  All lofts reported a very good race and keen to come back next week.

Many thanks to all who came and supported our venture.

Why not come along next Tuesday evening for race marking for another midweek race from Navan?

With both transporters filled to capacity and excellent racing conditions Viv and I set off for Navan. We knew it would be a fast race with the light south wind and broken cloud.

The birds were liberated at 12:30 and soared high into the sky, one half turn and they were on their way. The top racing loft of Jim Braniff, from the Fortfield Club, leads the way with his champion blue cock. For the second week in a row Sean O'Halloran has to settle for second place again. Sean's birds put up a good performance to also take 4th and 5th.

The "in form" loft of Jonny Jackson is well placed in third position, after a good race at the weekend Jonny's birds are "on song".

Well done to all who raced with us today and many thanks to all who train faithfully.

Midweek Race Results - 14/5/14

With an excellent turnout of racers and trainers Viv and I headed for Navan. Light misty rain greeted us at the Newry mountains and for the remainder of the journey. After holding the birds for approximately 1 hour the conditions improved to high cloud with light S.W. wind. Approx 2000 birds were released and split into four batches; within minutes they were gone. A liberators delight!

The 'in form' loft of John Jackson of the Glen Club hit the front with his blue pied cock, which won 1st Club last weekend. This bird was bred for John by our second placed man, Sean O'Halloran of the Grosvenor Club.

In third spot was Winky O'Boyle of the Ligoniel Club. With most reporting 100% returns, it sets the birds up for the weekend.  Many thanks to all who support our midweek racing.

Next week we plan to race from Balbriggan. We have a race code for measurements, so let me have your IR number or your longitude and latitude details asap. With the channel racing upon us we feel this would be a good race point!

With the weather forecast predicting heavy showers we were uncertain if we would get a release. I encountered a number of heavy showers on my way to Navan, but fortunately it brightened up with high broken cloud and a stiff westerly breeze. The birds were liberated at 12:15.

I watched nervously and to my relief they cleared in seconds and headed straight for home.

The stiff west wind played a big part in the result today with the partnership of McCormick & Muckle of Millisle having a super day taking the first 5 positions.

Thank you to all fanciers who supported our venture.  A total of 1500 trainers & racers were liberated at 12.15 at Navan with a light north wind.

An excellent result for the loft of Jonny Porter & Son better known as the Whiterock Rockets, timing 2 birds to take 1st & 2nd with a velocity of 1266 & 1266 & winning a total of £80. Jonny was very keen to point out that the birds were nest mates which had been bred for him by his good friends G & P Brown of Annsborough from their excellent family of Dirk Van-Dyck/ Marijke-Vink pigeons.

In 3rd position was the Lisburn loft of L Magee & Son with a velocity of 1256 to collect £20. Alan was delighted with the result as he took 4th on 1252 & 5th on 1251. Well done to all who took part.
